Contact with semen
May 22, 2002
A few days ago I had a pretty low-risk encounter with someone - grinding and mutual masturbation. I've managed to reassure myself that I did not contract HIV through these activities, but what I am worried about is the fact that he ejaculated on my chest and stomach. I know that unbroken skin is a good barrier against HIV (and I also have no reason to suspect my partner was infected, but I didn't want to take any chances), but I wondered if it's at all likely for transmission to occur this way and if there are any cases of this happening. My skin is not entirely unblemished, and being in contact with his fluids this way really freaks me out! Thanks, Ryan.
Response from Mr. Kull
HIV cannot pass through intact skin, so there is no evidence that infection occurs this way. HIV is known to be sexually transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex--that's it.
