| pcr confusion Feb 22, 2001 I am very confused as there is so much conflicting information on the accuracy of PCR RNA viral load tests for diagnosis...now surely there must be a lot of information on the RNA levels of people who have recently seroconverted - say within 6 months of infection ? Can you clarify |

Response from Mr. Kull
You can't predict the levels of HIV RNA in a person since they are variable over time. PCR tests are only meaningful for diagnostic purposes when they are used appropriately (in conjunction with other tests or during strongly suspected acute retroviral syndrome). Because of high false-negative and false-positive rates when compared to the antibody tests, it is not recommended that people attempt to determine their serostatus with PCR testing. You should wait until at least three months have elapsed since your exposure and then get an antibody test. RMK | |||
