| Alcohol and HIV??? Dec 8, 2000 I had vaginal sex with a girl of unknown hiv status about three months ago. i was pretty drunk at the time but did use condom and dont believe the condom broke.(i checked it by filling it with water, and it didn't leak, but like i said i was drunk). do you personally feel that i am at high risk for hiv infection? Also, would alcohol make me a at higher risk and why? i am male. |

Response from Mr. Kull
A latex condom used for sexual intercourse that remains intact, is used properly and during the entire sex act, should be extremely effective at preventing HIV transmission. Some estimates rate effectiveness in this scenario as high as 99.9% effective. Alcohol use has the potential to increase your risk for infection by reducing inhibitions and increasing impulsivity. In other words, you may be at increased risk of having sex without a condom when you're drunk or high. In terms of alcohol affecting your immunity, please refer to Alcohol-vs-Immune System. RMK | |||
