Very Scared
Feb 9, 2002

About 2-1/2 weeks ago I had my first gay experience in 16 years. It was a chance encounter. I performed oral sex on him for a minute or two with no ejaculation, and he performed oral sex on me. I am now experiencing neck and groin pain and wondering if I should get an RDNA test.

Response from Mr. Kull

You should talk to your doctor about any symptoms that you are having that cause you concern.

Performing oral sex on an HIV infected man poses a low, but possible, risk for infection. The risk is much lower when compared to anal sex without condoms. Most studies to date say that the risk of infection through fellatio is low, and a recent study showed that the risk was almost negligible. Getting his semen in your mouth increases that risk. Ejaculation in the mouth probably accounts for most cases of transmission through oral sex. Other factors, like the condition of your oral health, your immune response, and his viral load, may have some role in the likelihood of transmission when performing oral sex.

Viral load testing is not indicated for an exposure of this sort. Antibody testing three months after your exposure will be sufficient. Still talk to your doctor if your symptoms continue.
