Now that OraQuick is FDA approved, when will it be available at clinics, like Planned Parenthood? Thanks.
Response from Mr. Kull
OraQuick is a new rapid HIV testing technology that collects a drop of blood through a fingerstick device and gives results in approximately 20 minutes. The FDA cites the test as 99.6% accurate. Positive results would need to be confirmed through additional testing methods (there's a small percentage of people who would have a false positive as this process does not use confirmatory Western Blot testing).
Don't expect these tests to be widely available immediately. Government agencies are pushing manufacturers to make rapid tests more widely available, but issues of cost and degree of the test's complexity will determine where and when the testing method will be available. See the CDC's info on this topic.
I couldn't get through to Planned Parenthood to find out if OraQuick is available (or when it will be), so give them a call if you're interested. OraSure testing is available at Planned Parenthood; hopefully OraQuick is not far behind. You can also contact OraSure for more information about product avaiability in your area.
