Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,
Yes it's possible, but certainly not as desirable as having more robust immune reconstitution demonstrated by increasing absolute CD4 count and CD4 percentage. A CD4 count hovering near 200 places you at increased risk for PCP (Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia). Certainly your current regimen appears to be working well virologically, as your HIV plasma viral load has been suppressed to undetectable levels. I would suggest you have your HIV specialist evaluate you for any potential conditions in addition to HIV that could be keeping your CD4 counts suppressed. I would also advise you monitor CD4% (rather than absolute CD4 count) and look for trends up or down over time. Depending on what regimens you've tried in the past and your HIV resistance profiles (genotype and phenotype), it may be worthwhile considering a switch to an alternative potent regimen to attempt to boost the CD4 count and percentage.
