Safe Sex

I hope you answer this question. Please, Dr. Bob, it would be most appreciated. I just made a donation, but feel free to include your link to encourage others to give to your important organization.

My question-- If HIV is so difficult to spread through oral sex, common contact, etc. Does that mean that everyone now infected with HIV got it from a blood transfusion, iv drug use, occupational exposure, and anal/vaginal sex?

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,

No. Mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth or breast feeing is another major route of transmission. Also transmission risk via oral sex is low, but not completely nonexistent. There are many factors that are involved with HIV transmission, including viral strain, viral load, host genetics, host immune health, immune integrity, local trauma, concurrent infections, etc. Consequently there are indeed some HIVers who contracted their infection via oral sex. However, the overall risk of HIV transmission/acquisition is much greater for vaginal sex and even greater still for anal sex. You can read much more about HIV-transmission risk in the archives and at related links.

Thank you for your tax-deductible donation to the Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation (www.concertedeffort.org).

Be well. Stay well. Stay informed.

Dr. Bob
