Assert Risk
Aug 26, 2005
Hello Dr. Bob,
I was reading the recent Question about PEP. So (if i got that right) the presence of menstrual blood doesn't change the estimated risk very much and the estimated per-act risk of acquiring HIV from unprotected insertive vaginal sex with an HIV-positive partner and menstrual blood present would still be around 5/10000 ?
Thanks for you time.
pd.
Are you coming to Argentina in November? (I'm from Argentina too)

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hey pd,
Vaginal sex during menstruation may increase the risk of HIV transmission from an infected female to an uninfected male; however, it probably does not increase the risk of transmission from an infected male to an uninfected female. Hope that clarifies any confusion.
Yes, we are still planning to be in Buenos Aires in November. That is if we can master the Tango by then.
Dr. Bob
