Rubbing the Wrong Way?

Mar 6, 2001

Dear Ryan: Now that AIDS has been around for over 2 decades, I'm still nervous about "safe" sex since as far as gay sex goes, there seems to be an element of risk in everything. What of frottage (rubbing named bodies together)? Other than open wounds on the body, could it be risky too? Could one partner's semen be absorbed into the other's urethera? HELP!!!!

Response from Mr. Kull

The urethra is a viable route for HIV transmission (it consists of mucous membranes), as are open sores or deep cuts/wounds. Fluids infected with virus coming into contact with intact skin does not pose a risk for infection. The cells on your skin are different than the cells located in mucous membranes and do not provide HIV the access needed for infection. That is why we don't consider rubbing bodies against one another (dry humping, frottage, grinding, lap dancing, etc.) to be a real risk for infection.

should I get tested if...
Frustrated and confused. Please help.
