Worried, please help clarify!
Mar 12, 2008

Dr. Bob,

I have read through your forum and am impressed by your answers. Please, please help clarify something for me, as I have literally been worried sick. I have seen references in various forums about blood transmission and the experts response going something like: "unless they were profusely bleeding..." Does this mean the blood must be visible? A significant amount? I recently received a facial (the Nordstrom's kind, not the other :) ) and had acne on my face. The technician did not use gloves and I am concerned that there could have been some small cut on his hand. None of my acne was actively bleeding (as it was all bumbs, no cuts), but a dermabrasion substance was used which helped get rid of dead skin. Perhaps it peeled away a small scab as well?? Thus, my concern. I never saw any blood from either party but, could the rubbing of scabs/small cuts (maybe a papercut) risk transmission. A brief response would be greatly appreciated and I will be sure to send a donation your way. Thank you for all your hard work! Sick with Worry.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello Sick with Worry,

Your concerns even if it were the other kind of facial are unwarranted. If HIV were that easy to get, it would have wiped out the planet long ago. I see no reason to worry or to even consider HIV testing. Relax and enjoy your radiant new complexion. (If you continue to needlessly worry, your pimples will pop out again due to the stress!)

Thanks for your donation to the Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation (www.concertedeffort.org).

Stay well.

Dr. Bob
