Does Repeated Exposure Affect Testing?
Nov 4, 2009
Hello,
If, say, your partner unwittingly contracts HIV and continues to have sex with you will tests still show up positive 3 months out from first exposure even though you have been exposed again to the same person more recently?
Thanks a lot. I will donate.

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello T,
Most folks who become infected with HIV will develop detectable levels of anti-HIV antibodies in their blood within four to six weeks following exposure and primary infection. We recommend waiting until the three-month mark (from time of exposure) for a definitive test.
Not every HIV exposure leads to HIV infection. However, once someone becomes infected, the seroconversion process begins from the time of that exposure. Repeated exposures thereafter will not affect the seroconversion process or duration of the window period once someone has contracted the virus.
