need your words of wisdom
May 2, 2008

I found out this week that an ex boyfriend has tested positive for HIV.

I am now pretty sure that he had it while we were together.

The last time we were together was in June 2006. He was my long-time boyfriend, so we never used protection.

I have been tested twice in the past week. I went to two different planned parenthoods and got the rapid test done, and they were both negative.

I also got an oral test done, I don't get the results from that test until Wednesday.

I am having such a hard time dealing with all of this. I am worried about false negatives. I don't see how I could not have it, since I had sex with him unprotected.

Do you think that I should be tested again?

Words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!!!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,

Your fears are unwarranted. You are definitively and conclusively HIV negative. What you (and so many others) apparently don't realize is that every HIV exposure does not lead to HIV transmission. Yes, it is true HIV transmission can occur with only a single exposure, but it's also true that most exposures don't lead to transmission (thankfully!). many factors come into play when considering HIV transmission viral strain, viral load, route of exposure, genetics, immune integrity, concurrent infections, local trauma, etc., etc., etc.

Stop worrying and start WOO-HOOing.

I'd also suggest you spend some time perusing the information on this site to gain a better understanding of HIV basics.

Be well. Stay well. Stay safe.

Dr. Bob
