Rare Immunoglobulin Disorder
Apr 26, 2008
Dear Dr. Frascino,
You refer often to rare immunoglobulin disorders, etc as being a reason for potential false negative ELISA's. Would a person be aware that they had such a disorder? For the average adult, would it have already shown itself in some medical way? My doctor treats my CBC as the holy grail, never going beyond it. If it looks good, then I'm goodregardless of how I'm feeling at the time. I just want to know my doctor wouldn't miss something major.
Thank you!

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,
Rare immunoglobulin disorders are indeed "rare" as the name so cleverly suggests. If an adult had one of these disorders, would he know it? Absolutely, as he would be unable to fight off certain types of infections. These are not subtle conditions and no, you don't require special screening to see if you have one or not. If your ELISA is negative outside the window period, I suggest you believe it, yell WOO-HOO and stop worrying, OK?
Dr. Bob
