Corticosteroid use and HIV Rapid tests
Nov 7, 2009

Dear Dr Bob, Can treatment with 30mg prednisone daily for 10 days done 6 months before taking the HIV Rapid test(Method used is immuno blot) cause a false negative ?I tested negative but have Angular chelitis for nearly a month now 2 years after testing negative. So I am worried . How accurate is this particular testing assay?

Hi,

Your 10-day course of prednisone taken six months prior to your rapid HIV test would not affect the validity of the result. The vast majority of cases of angular cheilitis have absolutely nothing to do with HIV/AIDS. HIV is not your problem. No way. No how. (This is assuming you tested outside the window period.) My advice is that you stop worrying and start WOO-HOO-ing.

Be well.

Dr. Bob
