I know double bagging is a bad idea -- does that also go for condom use in conjunction with a female condom?
Jun 25, 2009
Hi, Dr. Bob -- my question actually comes from my young lady. We have actually been having a surprisingly satisfying time sexually (safe, of course) but she is afraid of penetration regardless of my wearing a condom. (If anyone cares, we use a lot of toys) She would like to know if my wearing a well-lubed condom (say, lubed with silicone oil, which does not dry out like water-based lubes) in conjunction with her using a female condom shares the same drawbacks as double-bagging?
Thank you.

Response from Dr. Frascino
Hi,
Using a latex male condom, lubrication (water-based or silicone-based) and a female condom is safe, because female condoms are made of polyurethane, not latex. The problem with "double bagging" using two latex condoms is that the friction of latex on latex can increase the risk of condom failure (breakage). Latex against polyurethane does not pose this threat.
