Please "edify" this one too
Feb 23, 2008
Sir, its quite a coincidence that a question that I wanted ask you to get an expert's opinion, has been asked by another Indian Doctor, only in my case, when I was assisting abscess aspiration, patient's blood, about 3 drops got on my bare hands[no gloves] came from that patient whose HIV Status was not known. Now I do remember the absence of a cut/dermatitis/abrasion/open wound on my hands at that time. And please Dr.Bob, assess my situation too. Essentially, my bare hands were exposed to about 3-4 drops of a patient's blood whose HIV status remains unknown, no skin breach as far as I remember..yet I keep wondering if I failed to notice any break in the skin of my hands ..the apprehension and anxiety is clouding my mind. Please write back Dear Sir

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hi,
HIV cannot penetrate intact skin. Your worries are unwarranted. However personally, I'm beginning to worry about the medical school training related to transmission/acquisition of bloodborne pathogens for Indian physicians! This is really very basic information that all health care workers should be well versed in.
Dr. Bob
