Can I become a personal trainer even though I am HIV positive?
Feb 18, 2008
I recently went to a school that teaches personal training. On the application, it asks whether or not I have communicable diseases or if I take medication. I didn't answer those questions and left them blank until I find this out. Could they deny me entry because I am Hiv positive?

Response from Dr. Frascino

Hello,
I have no way of knowing from which country you are writing or what specific exclusionary criteria there might be for the specific training program you're interested in. In most situations in the U.S. it is illegal to discriminate based on HIV serostatus, unless it would put others at increased risk. I'd suggest you anonymously call the program you are interested in and ask if a positive HIV serostatus would exclude someone from enrolling.
Good luck.
Dr. Bob
