oral sex

Mar 11, 2002

Is it possible for a man to contract aids if another man performs oral sex on him?

Response from Mr. Kull

If you are talking about insertive oral sex (the HIV negative man is putting his penis into an HIV positive person's mouth), then the risk is practically zero. There is no evidence to support that HIV is transmitted through insertive oral sex, but the risk is not absent; this is why we might say that the risk is theoretical only.

These are the ways that HIV is known to be sexually transmitted:

1) Anal sex, receptive or insertive

2) Vaginal sex, receptive or insertive

3) Oral sex, receptive fellatio or insertive cunnulingus (transmission to the person whose mouth is on the genitals)

Since you were not engaging in these sexual activities (you participated in insertive fellatio), then the risk of transmission is theoretical only. See Saliva as a Barrier for more information.
