 Yes, particularly in patients who have been recently infected (within the last couple of years), and in whom I am able to see within the first couple of months of infection. As months go by after acute infection, the likelihood of detecting wildtype virus (no resistance) by resistance testing goes up in the absence of drug pressure. Another scenario for testing before starting any therapy, even in long-term infected people, is if they are practicing unsafe sex or needle sharing with high risk partners of unknown serostatus or are HIV infected.
