|How long does it take to get results?
Mar 24, 2001
Hello Dr. My doc says I need to get a resistance test done. Does either genotyping or phenotyping take longer than the other? About how long does each take to get back results?
Response from Dr. Little
The turn around time of resistance testing (both genotype and phenotype) are highly variable and depend on whether the tests are performed "in house" (that is, at your local hospital or university) or sent out to a reference laboratory. In general, genotype tests are faster to perform, but test results of both types are generally available within 2-3 weeks. Some clinical sites may have contracts which restrict their access to only certain laboratories, hence it is possible that both shorter and longer turn around times will be quoted to you. If speed is important, it is best to ask your provider for the anticipated turn around time for this information at your location. Alternatively, you may be able to contact the laboratory directly and find this information.
