How does a geno work
Apr 3, 2002

Dr Little, Could explain to me our they test the blood for resistence.Who does the genotype work.Thank you.

Response from Dr. Little

A genotype test is simply a genetic test of the HIV in your blood stream - this test requires that you have enough virus to do the test (generally more than 1000 copies of HIV). The genetic sequence of the virus is determined and compared with reference or published sequences with particular focus upon the sites which have been previously identified to confer drug resistance. That is, if your virus shows the same genetic sequence as a virus which is well characterized in many studies (ie published reputable studies) and associated with drug resistance to drug X, then it may be inferred that your virus has probable resistance to drug X. The major mutations to all available drugs are well mapped, and it is now not too difficult to make predications about which drugs will or will not work - to a great extent - based upon this test result and your past antiretroviral drug taking history.

a holiday so resistance test can be done.
Is this change wise???
