is it possible
Sep 27, 2000

Dr, Is it possible that stress or anxiety can cause dry mouth so severe to cause dental problems (like Retracting gums, Aphthous Ulcers, and coated tongue) coupled with caffeine and Smoking, or is it a sure sign of HIV. Thanks

Response from Dr. Reznik

The answer to your question is hopefully straight-forward: stress can lead to dry mouth and oral ulcers. Dry mouth, combined with stress can lead to periodontal (gum) problems and dental caries. Smoking, dry mouth and caffeine can lead to coated tongue. All of the aforementioned conditions occur in the general public regardless of HIV status.

DR
