risk of contracting from saliva
Sep 10, 1999

Dear Dr Reznik. can a child get the hiv virus from putting toys in his mouth just after one with hiv had it in their mouth?

Response from Dr. Reznik

Saliva is not considered a body fluid that would put anyone at risk for HIV infection. Actually there is a good deal of research which shows that saliva has properties which bind to and thus inactivates HIV. This is why casual contact such as sharing drinking glasses, kissing, etc, are considered safe activities.

DR
