HIV transmission through HSV I?
Dec 12, 2000

My HIV+ roommate frequently has fever blisters on his lip and he is constantly picking at them. Is there any possibility that I can contract fever blisters and/or HIV from sharing the same living spaces. I have contacts and have a habit of touching them and am wondering if I touch something he has just touched after picking at the sore and then I put my finger on my contact if I am at risk. Thank you so much.

Response from Dr. Reznik

HIV cannot be transmitted via casual contact such as sharing a living space, sharing eating utensils, etc. HSV is more contagious, but as long as you thoroughly wash your hands before inserting your contacts, you should not be at risk for herpes transmission.
