Stessed about sores!! Jan 27, 2002 Dear Doc, I am worried about some sores on my tongue that are located on the side (only about 3 ). I went to the doctor back in December for these sores. They are lesions that are circular in shape with a red beefy middle and have a white ring around them. When they first appeared they were painful. They still are at times but not as bad. I also have some smooth patches on the top of my tounge that go from the middle to the tip of my tounge. They to have white boarders. I am concerned with them. I am terrified that they may be HIV related. I have not been tested, but when I went to the doctor for my tounge which looked alot worse then than now the doctor asked had I been stressed and I told her yes. She then applied a topical ointment to the ones on the tip of my tounge that hurt the most and sent me home. My condition has gotten better since that visit. I have been to the doctor and had STD tests (except HIV) and all came back negative. I thought I might have hairy leukoplakia but when I looked at the website you provided none of the pictures seem to fit my condition. I am very concerned about my mouth. The lesions are the only thing present besides a coated tounge which goes away when I eat and brush with Armor hammer baking soda. The rings around the sores usually fade during the day and reappear at night or when I have not eaten. Please give me your opinion. There has been no swelling or fever associated with this conditon. I did read the HIV infected people can also get geographic tounge which scares me more since I think geographic tounge is what I might have. Is there a time period from a persons last sexual encounter that these lesions will appear? Nick B. |

 Geographic tongue is in no way related to HIV infection. This oral manifestation is sometimes treated with topical steroid to alleviate the symptoms and tends to wax and wane. If the areas become painful, you may consider applying Orabase Soothe-N-Seal (S-N-S), an over-the-counter product, to the painful areas. S-N-S is a medical grade cyanoacrylate that acts like an oral bandage and should provide relief. If you feel you are at risk for HIV infection, please take the time to be tested. Take care, DR |
