Dry mouth
Jan 21, 2002

I have been experiencing dry mouth after sleeping and have geographic tongue for 3 months now. I started using breathe right strips at nite and these have helped my dry mouth a lot (less mouth breathing) but I am wondering what I can do to treat geographic tongue - my doctor says let it run its course and offered nothing.

Response from Dr. Reznik

Geographic tongue is thought to be an autoimmune disorder that is, in most cases, not treated. If you case is causing discomfort, you can rinse with a topical steroid mouth rinse, such as Decadron elixir (0.5mg/5mL), 3 to 4 times a day for relief. Be sure not to swallow the steroid, as the topical effects of this preparation are effective.

I hope this helps!

DR
