I need a crown
Jan 13, 2002

HI! I need to get a crown on one of my upper front teeth. Are there any possible side effects or issues I need to be concerned about as HIV+? I am on Sustiva/Combivir and have high TCell count (about 1000) and undetectable VL.

Thanks

Response from Dr. Reznik

The general answer is that dentistry for asymptomatic people living with HIV disease is no different that for those who are HIV negative. In other words, it is perfectly safe for you to have a crown placed.

My only advice would be that if you are experiencing dry mouth (xerostomia), make sure you continue to visit the dentist on a regular basis and consider using a prescription strength home fluoride to prevent decay around your crown.

I hope this helps!

DR
