Dr.
My CD4 is 393 and it seems that my gums are starting to recede, (first noticed when the hygenist made a comment)
Can this me Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis.
I thought that this is supposed to happen only below 200.]
If not, what else caused gums to recede, could it be just stress. What is the treatment.
Thanks

Response from Dr. Reznik

NUP or necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is a very painful condition that would normally involve loosening of the teeth, a very bad odor in your mouth, and potentially bleeding which may even occur at night when you are asleep. What you have described definitely does not sound like NUP.
It is important to point out that gingivitis and periodontitis are very common in the general population. People living with HIV disease, who may manifest serious conditions such as NUP, are still prone to common dental problems such as "receding gums"
Without the ability to take a look in your mouth and see diagnostic dental x-rays, I am unable to give you a specific cause for your gum problem. As long as you continue to regularly visit your dentist and dental hygienist, they should be able, with a great deal of assistance from you (great home care, changing out your toothbrush when the bristles start to flare out, etc)to manage the problem.
Take care!
