Lip abrasion
Dec 30, 1999

Hi Doc After having tested negative continuously for eight months after a single possible medical exposure, I have no symptom now except a minor abrasion on the lower lip which does not go away and some rash like benign skin condition on inside of left cheek. How common is this as sole indicators of HIV+ after about 1 year from a possible exposure.

Response from Dr. Reznik

I would not suspect HIV infection if the sole presentations are as you describe. On the other hand, if I had a minor abrasion on my lip that would not go away, I'd go see a dentist with oral medicine experience or an oral pathologist ASAP. The causes of this irritation could be something as simple as continued trauma or a non-healing herpetic infection or in the worse case oral cancer.

Have you been tested for HIV? If not, and you know you have been exposed, I would highly recommend that you get tested.

I hope this helps!

DR
