Response from Dr. Reznik

Red band gingivitis (Linear Gingival Erythema) may be difficult to distinguish from conventional gingivitis therefore the answer to your question would be that red bands around the necks of a few teeth would not be a "sure sign" of HIV infection. Linear Gingival Erythema appears as a red band along the marginal gingiva and may be associated with complaints of occasional bleeding. For a picture of what this manifestation looks like, please visit the following URL: http://www.hivdent.org/slides/linear_gingival_erythema1.htm
Take care and visit your dental hygienist soon for a thorough dental cleaning!
