Canker Sores
Jan 18, 2001

Thanks for all your valuable info! Are canker sores the same as aphtous ulcers? I have a history of getting canker sores in my mouth but recently I've had recurring canker sores. Could this be the result of stress or maybe throwing up? I took an HIV test about a month ago and it was negative. Thanks for your help!

Response from Dr. Reznik

Canker sore is a commonly used phrase for aphthous ulcerations; in other words, they are the same thing. Whereas we do not know what causes canker sores (aphthous ulcerations) we do know that certain factors are usually involved such as stress, smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, etc. A direct correlation between canker sores and HIV status has not been determined, twenty years into the epidemic. What we do know is that major (large) aphthous ulcerations tend to be more painful and last longer in people with HIV/AIDS.

Take care,

DR
