Visit Dentist More Often?
Jul 19, 1999
First...thankyou for your time and participation in this forum. Alot of us dont have as much contact with our Dentist as we do with our ID doctors. My question is, if HIV meds can somehow speed up decay (by dry mouth...etc) would it be advisable to go for a cleaning more often than every 6 months? Also, would x-rays be advisable more often than usual?

Response from Dr. Reznik

Whether or not you need to visit the dentist more often would depend on several factors such as degree of dry mouth, present condition of your teeth and gums, past dental history, and your home care practices.
If you have a history of good oral health with good oral hygiene practices and have recently developed moderate dry mouth, six month preventive dental visits with a regular x-ray schedule would be fine.
If you have a history of dental decay with numerous restored teeth and/or a history of gum (periodontal problems) and have recently developed dry mouth, more frequent visits and fuoride supplements may be indicated.
In other words, each case should be individualized and based on several factors which can be easily determined by your dental professional. If you are concerned that dry mouth is becoming a problem, schedule a dental exam and discuss these issues with your provider who then would be able to advise you on the best course to take.
I hope this helps!
