Vitamin Supplements and HIV
Apr 7, 1999

Has there ever been any research concerning vitamin deficiencies for people living with HIV? I don't want to take 35 vitamins a day, just the ones that have been proven to be necessary. Your comments please.

Response from Dr. Dieterich

The only vitamin that has been intensively studied is vitamin B 12. It was found that people with higher vitamin B 12 levels lived longer than those that did not. Of course that may reflect the fact that those people who were not going to live did not absorb B 12 well from their GI tract. It would be wise to take one multivitamin per day to ensure that you are getting the minumum daily requirement and other than that consult with your doctor or nutritionist about any particular extra needs.
