Amprenavir & fatty foods
May 12, 1999

Could you clarify some things about amprenavir. I heard that I must avoid antiacids and fatty foods. Does this mean just one hour before or after taking amprenavir or always?

Response from Dr. Fisher

Glaxo recommends avoiding a "high-fat" meal with amprenavir based on studies in normal volunteers given a "standardized" high-fat meal, namely 67g fat, 33 g protein, 58g carbs, total 967 Kcal. The ansorption of amprenavir was reduced in the post-fat meal compared to fasting. So they recommend avoiding high-fat meals with the drug. It's probably preferable to wait 2 hours after eating (or take it 1 hour prior to eating) if you will be eating a high-fat meal.

Alvan Fisher, M.D.
