| Alcohol and HIV Apr 20, 2000 I want to know of any negative or positive interactions of alcohol and the antiviral drugs. Which drugs are impacted more. The impact of the drugs, alcohol on the liver and the kidneys. Also, on how to get your cholesterol level down that was caused by the protease inhibitors. |

Response from Dr. Dieterich
The drugs that are most likely to be affected by alcohol consumption are ritonavir(Norvir) and indinavir(Crixivan). They share the same elimination pathway in the liver. However all the drugs may be affected in some ways by consuming alcohol especially in excess. What is excess? probably more than 2 drinks per day would be trouble for most people. The kidneys are generally spared from alcohol trouble. I would recommend you to an NIH conference next week in Bethesda on alcohol and HIV. Everything in moderation! Douglas T.
