HIV & Bariatric Surgery
Jan 1, 2013
Are HIV positive people still able to have bariatric surgery? Are there any particular risk factors?
Response from Dr. Pierone
HIV infection is not a valid reason to exclude a patient from bariatric surgery. There would need to be a reasonable CD4 count (above 200) to ensure that the risk of infection would be low. The decision to have bariatric surgery should not be made without careful consideration. In addition, there typically is an extended period of preparation with programs of dietary and behavioral education before surgery is undertaken.
I hope this information helps and best of luck!
