fish oil containing astaxanthin
Apr 6, 2012

Hi Nelson i have recently started taking a new fish oil pill. It contains Omega3 - 500mg, omega6 - 120mg, omega 9 - 360mg. DHA(docosahexaenoic acid) 500mg, EPA(eicosapentaenoic acid) 120mg, DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) 64mg. but it also contains something called Astaxanthin (3 mcg). Do you know if Astaxanthin is ok to take in terms of interaction with ARV drugs> I'm currently on Truvada and Sustiva with a viral load of less than 40 copies and CD4 of around 600. Would this fish oil suppliment be ok to take in your oppinion.

Response from Mr. Vergel

Astaxanthin is a carotene antioxidant compound made from shrimp or algae. It is not converted to vitamin A (retinol) in the human body. Like other carotenoids, astaxanthin has limited absorption orally and such low toxicity by mouth that no toxic syndrome is known. It is used to feed salmon to give it its pink color. It has not been studied in interactions studies with HIV meds. The dose in the Omega 3 supplement you are taking is tiny, though.
