Eating raw meat
Nov 7, 2009

Hi I've been HIV+ for about 4 years. I'm currently taking Atripla, have an undetectable VL, a CD4 count of around 500 and am feeling fine. I am something of a foodie and enjoy eating rare meat, sometimes completely raw meat (eg, steak tartare) is this a dangerous habit given my HIV status? I have heard that people with impaired immune systems should avoid raw / rare meat, but given that I have (reasonably) good CD4 count, is this really something I need to worry about? Many thanks for any advice! Mark

Response from Mr. Vergel

I would avoid rare meat of all kinds. I even avoid sushi due to fear of contamination, food poisoning and parasites.

Don't play with fire. Gut-related problems in HIV can be very difficult to treat sometimes
