| Should I lose weight? Nov 20, 2008 Hi, Last 2 years I had Pnemonia and my CD4 was 10 and weigh 48kg after losing a lot if weight. I was hospitalised and started the treatment. Since then I've recovered and a few month after the starting on medication, I got chicken pox. Of course, I recovered and now my CD4 is above 300. And now I've gain weight steadily. I'm 69kg now and reaching 70kg easily. Should I worry about gaining more weight because gaining weight may cause other issues? Thanks. |

Response from Mr. Vergel
Without knowing your height and waist size I really cannot comment People who go on HAART and who start at lower CD4 numbers tend to gain more weight than those who start HAART at higher CD4 levels. Some researchers call it a "return to health" phenomenom, although I tend to call it lipohypertrophy if the weight gained is mostly visceral (organ related) fat. Increased visceral fat has been linked to increased incidence of diabetes, high lipids, hypertension, insulin resistance, and other metabolic problems. But gaining weight after wasting syndrome is a great thing, so it all depends Nelson | ||||||||||
