| Immune and Calorie Bossting Foods Jun 25, 2008 I am a female "hardgainer" and have always been thin. I am 5'4'' and maintain a weight of 100lbs. Can you recommend foods that both boost immune function and also safely adds calories? Currently taking Reyataz, Epzicom and Norvir. I know one of of the meds can affect my liver and cholesterol levels. Thanks! |

Response from Mr. Vergel
I would try two shakes a day of the cheapest whey protein supplement you can find. Add flaxseed oil to the shakes for added calories and good fats. Also, concentrate on peanut butter (natural is better than processed due to lower saturated fat content), cheese, almonds and other nuts, beef, chicken, tuna, salmon, cottage cheese (probably best for growth), eggs, etc Try to eat 6 small meals a day and work out wit weights and machines while keeping your cardio work outs to a minimun. You may want to check out supplements like JUVEN that have been shown to increase lean body mass in HIV positive people. Also, get plenty of sleep and water! If you are one of the few lucky patients who has access to a dietitian that actually has training in HIV, have your doctor refer you to him/her for nutritional counseling. Of course, check your lipids, glucose, liver and kidney function every three months while you are increasing your caloric intake and density. I hope this helps! Nelson | ||||||||||
