stomach fat
Apr 19, 2008

I have been on sustiva and combivir for almost 3 years now. Since then I have gained almost 20 pounds of hard fat around my midsection and can't seem to lose it. Do you have any good suggestions for losing the fat?

Response from Mr. Vergel

Sustiva can increase LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, specially in the presence of AZT in Combivir. Higher lipids have been associated in some studies with higher visceral fat increases.

Have your doctor check your lipids first. Talk to him or her about other metabolically friendly HIV meds. May be just replacing the Combivir with Truvada ( Sustiva+Truvada= Atripla in many countries) while you cut your sweets/fatty foods down and start a working-out program can help you decrease the fat in the midsection. But it takes a long time and patience is key.

Let us know what happens!

Nelson
