| DHEA helps increasing T-cell production? Mar 1, 2004 I have read under www.ciel.ch that the nutrition supplement DHEA(DeHydroEpiAndrosteron), a Steroid-Hormone, is strengthening the immune system, especially the T-cell production among others. Can you give me please your idea about it when being used for an HIV infected young lady who is still not being under medication. Thank you! |

Response from Mr. Vergel
DHEA is an androgenic hormone produced by the adrenal glands. There are some studies that show some immune benefit but no HIV data are available yet. I have taken the supplement and found no immune benefit. It can increase testosterone levels in women. This can be a good thing if you have low testosterone and symptoms of testosterone defficiency like lack of sex drive, fatigue, lean body mass loss, depression, etc. Have your doctor check your DHEA levels first. You do not want to take more than you need (no more than 20 mg a day for women) since it can have androgenic (masculinizing effects) in women (growth of facial hair, deeping of the voice, etc) Nelson | |||||||||
