Vitamin C and PIs
Feb 4, 1998

Is there any reason to cut back on a dosage of 3000 mg of vitamin C a day if one is taking Crixivan? Conversely, is there any reason to take this much vitamin C? I know that one can take Crixivan with juice, but are juices with low Ph to be avoided. I don't know where I got that notion, but somewhere it got stuck in my head.

Response from Dr. Gallant

Most of the vitamin C you take in is going to get eliminated in the urine without ever being used, so the biggest reason to avoid high doses is to save money. (But then, it's not exactly a big-ticket item if you buy the store brand.)

Vitamin C can cause stomach upset at high doses, and at very high doses it can also contribute to kidney stones, something that it has in common with Crixivan. I certainly wouldn't call 3000 mg an overdose, but it's also more than you need. Personally, I'd back off a bit, but not because I think you're really doing yourself any harm.
