muscle-building supplements?
Nov 2, 2009
I am a fifty year-old diabetic man living with HIV. Recently, I was hospitalized for surgery and suffered side effects from the use of steroids that sent my glucose levels through the roof. Between May and July (I had the surgery in July), I lost a total of about fifteen pounds.I am at an ok weight (173lbs), but I'll gain four pounds then I'll lose five.
Is there a supplement that (with exercise) will put on muscle? Most of the fat that I have is in my belly area. Something that is not milk based would be great. Can you recommend something? Thank you so much.

Response from Mr. Vergel

I am assuming you mean corticoid steroids when you say that your blood sugar went through the roof.
There are some good egg white powders out there that can be used for shakes by those with lactose intolerance. There is also a supplement called Juven (Juven.com) that has some good pilot data on increases in weight in HIV. It contains amino acids and no milk based products.
I would probably not use creatine monohydrate if I was you due to your blood sugar issues.
Make sure that your testosterone blood levels are within range and ask your doctor to supplement it with a gel if your testosterone is low. Testosterone replacement in those with low testosterone can improve glucose tolerance and help with weight gain.
