Breast & Gut problem
Jul 4, 2009

Hello,

I'm a 43 year old male and have been on Atripla for two years now. I've noticed that I have developed a gut and breast. What causes this and what could I do to get rid of the gut and enlarged breast? Is the Abs diet safe for people with HIV? Also, what would be a good substitute for grapefruit since I can't eat it any longer becasue of drug interaction?

Thank you fro you time.

Atripla has Sustiva (Efavirenz) which has been shown to cause enlarged breasts in a minority of men. It may be caused by increased production of estrogen.

You may want to talk to your doctor about switching you to another combo or having you take 0.5 mg a day of Arimidex, an estrogen blocker, to see how it works. But we have concerns about decrease in bone density due to long term estrogen blocking with Arimidex.

Other first line combos are boosted Reyataz plus Truvada, Isentress plus Truvada, or any of the ones described in the DHHS guidelines that your doctor hopefully is well aware of.
