Response from Mr. Vergel

Bone density is measured by DEXA scanning (dual x ray absorptiometry)
Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) uses a small amount of radiation to measure bone density . Bone mineral density of the hip is considered the best predictor of hip fracture risk, while central DEXA of the hip and spine is the preferred measurement for definitive diagnosis
Normal bone density is indicated by a measurement that is within one standard deviation of a normal young adult, or a T-score between -1.0 and 1.0. The World Health Organization defines osteoporosis by a measurement of bone mineral density that is 2.5 standard deviations below that of a healthy young person, or a T-score at or below -2.5. T-scores between 1.0 and 2.5 signify osteopenia, a lesser degree of bone mineral loss. DEXA uses separate data bases for men and women to calculate T scores.
Several studies have shown that we are at higher risk of having low bone density in HIV. We really do not know if it is HIV induced or if HIV meds make it worse.
