want to gain weight
Oct 31, 2008

I have been positive since 1998, I've been on meds since then. First I was on Sustiva and the last three years I've been on Atripla. T cell count was 2000 but now is 1400. I have lost weight but would like to gain weight. I am a semi-vegetarian, however, I do eat fish. Please let me know what steps I can use to gain weight.

I assume that your viral load is undetectable (less than 50 copies). If not then changing your regimen would be the best way to gain weight. If your virus is undetectable, you have a normal CD4 count. Your doctor should look at some physical reasons for unintended weight loss..you should have your thyroid function, fasting glucose (sugar), free testosterone level (if you are a male)tested to be sure there is no glandular abnormality. Are you having chronic diarrhea? Since you are a vegetarian (like me) it is important to be sure you are getting a balanced diet, including all the vitamins and protein you need. Good sources of protein can come from beans and nuts (or cheese and eggs if you are lacto-ovo). Have a talk with your health care provider and nutritionist.

Best,

Joe
