Self care for newly diagnosed
May 31, 2003

Nelson:

I am recently diagnosed as pos after a neg test last year (2002). My labs show a vl of over 300K and tcells 350-550. My liver enzymes are a bit high but no hep or other stds. I had hep vaccines--used to drink and some drugs but quit 18 years ago. I work out regularly, eat fruits and veggies, and have not smoked for 15 years.

I currently take propecia (for hair loss), luvox (for depression, anxiety) and just prescribed busbar for new anxiety. I take Super-hy-vites (100 veg. nutriotional supplement, vit E (400IU), bioflavaoids (1,000 mg. for skin). I have taken all these things except the busbar even before finding out I was pos in march.

Can you give me some recomendations about what I should take as far as vitimins and supplements? I am not on any hiv meds yet and of course hoping I dont have to for some time though that may not be possible. I also began acupunture last week. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Kevin

Response from Mr. Vergel

First of all, I am assuming you will get treatment with that kind of viral load. Since you seem to have a history of depression and anxiety, I would avoid Sustiva (talk to your doctor). I would also exercise with weights and cardio to keep my body in shape and manage some of the anxiety (amny studies show great results in that matter) Keep taking the vitamins. Make sure you get 200 micrograms a day of selenium and at 100 mg of riboflavin and thiamine. Get your hormones checked. Kep your protein intake up and your sugar and animal fats down. And, last but not least, protect your liver ( read this great article http://www.thebody.com/pinf/whatsnew_700/treatment.html ) Nelson
