Working out/ Diet
May 29, 2003

I just recently tested positive for HIV, I am going to start working out. My viral load is 84,300 and my t-cell count is 87. Im taking Mega-Man multivitamins now. I drink 2-3 times a week, usually beer. What are your suggestions?

Response from Mr. Vergel

I would be very careful eating vegetables that you did not wash yourself and water that may not be 100% clean if my T cells were under 100 because of the higher risk for parasites and cryptosporidium. I would find the best HIV doctor in town. I would get a genotype test done to see the resistance profile of my virus and make right treatment decisions based on that. If my genotype allowed for it, I would start with a simple combo of Viread+Viramune+Epivir or Kaletra+Combivir to control my virus. Keep taking your vitamins. Get tested for Hepatitis A and B and get vaccinated if you are negative to them. Get tested for STD's if you are sexually active also. Get a baseline BIA (body composition) test and hormone panel done also. Try to work out with weights and machines 3 times a week for an hour. If your fat content is above 20 %, start cardiovascular exercise 2-3 times a week for 30 min. You have a lot to discuss with your doctor... Nelson
