NEED NUTRITION HELP
May 7, 2003

Hi

i have been positive now for 6 months. i was "lucky" enolugh to find out during sero conversion, and opted to start meds right away. i am on combivir and sustiva, although i will likely come off them for a period of time in about a month as my doctors have suggested i wait to use meds until i need them for sure.

in all this, i am trying to find a way to eat better. currently i take a daily multi vitamin, and a vitamin b complex. i try to eat healthy, which means i have lots of fruits, fresh fruit drinks, protein shakes, protein bars, turkey, chicken, and a TON of water.

what else can i be doing? is there a suggested regimen of vitamins to take when one is positive? i would like to know...

THX

You seem to be doing pretty well with your diet and supplements. I would just make sure that you are getting at least 200 micrograms a day of selenium and 100 mg/day each of riboflavin and thiamine.I would also exercise (a combination of cardiovascular and resistance exercise is great to help build lean body mass and manage the accumulation of fat in the mid section. Visit www.hivfitness.org) Some people on AZT (in Combivir) may lose Carnitine, so 2000 mg of carnitine may not be a bad idea. Carnitine helps the body use fats for energy and prevents muscle weakness. Just keep eating lean meats, cold water fish (salmon, sardines, etc), nuts (almonds, pecans, etc), fruits (all colors) and vegetables. Keep your refined sugar (and corn syrup) intake low. Do not ever smoke and get plenty of rest. Also, read the link provided for more information on vitamins and HIV. Talk to your doctor about any supplements you are taking. He/she may also refer you to a HIV dietitian who can assist you with a customized program. nelson
